Chronic Pain

If you’re at all familiar with cannabis or cannabidiol (CBD), you’re probably well aware of its use in the medical realm as an option for the treatment of pain. The analgesic benefits of CBD via the body’s endocannabinoid system have been well-researched, with numerous clinical trials supporting claims of its effectiveness for pain.  But those who suffer with chronic pain are often left with further questions: will these benefits last over an extended period? Is CBD safe to use for long-term treatment?

Fortunately, the answer to both questions for chronic pain is “yes.”  In the early 2000s, a THC/CBD treatment known as Sativex® underwent clinical testing and was approved for use in Canada—for the chronic neuropathic pain of multiple sclerosis in 2005, then for pain related to cancer in 2007. Since then, Sativex and other cannabidiol-based products have consistently shown significant, long-term pain relief effects ideal for chronic pain sufferers. Amongst cannabinoid analgesic trials in general, no excessive or unacceptable cases of adverse health effects have been seen.

CBD treatment is not limited to the chronic pain of cancer and MS, of course. In fact, CBD has been found to be useful in the treatment of pain related to conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes and various types of inflammation (as it is not only an analgesic, but an anti-inflammatory agent). In addition to its direct effects on pain, cannabidiol also exhibits anti-anxiety characteristics. Because anxiety can play a psychological role in a person’s perception of discomfort, this may also lend a hand in the reduction of pain symptoms for chronic sufferers. In the case of Sativex®, patients dealing with chronic pain involved in studies also saw dramatic improvements in the quality of their sleep, which added to their comfort and resilience during waking hours.

There exists a wealth of medical knowledge to support the use of CBD treatments for chronic pain over the long term, and no evidence has yet been discovered of patients developing a tolerance to its effects during extended use. Those dealing with multiple co-existing conditions might also consider CBD for issues of chronic sleeplessness, anxiety, depression or recurring episodes of nausea.
